TBC Racing’s Summer season Juniors program. Find the program that works for you to train and race at the highest levels of the sport and have fun doing it!
Description
The summer season is designed for athletes with at least one season of rowing experience who want to continue their growth and development. During the summer, the program is organized to support a large number of athletes, and serve every level and individual schedule. Our racing team focuses on sweep rowing, while giving athletes opportunities to try their hand at sculling and small boats based on interest.
Program
While we are always one team, the programs will break down into age groups for the summer, with U17 and U19 splits. This is based on your age on December 31, 2024:
- U17: 16 or younger on December 31 of 2024.
- U19: 18 or younger on December 31 of 2024.
Within each age group, we will also divide up into smaller training cohorts based on skill with dedicated coaching staffs and a 12:1 ratio of athlete to coach.
Lead Coaches
U19 Women: Matt Russell
U19 Men: Justin Degaetano, David Noyes, Lee Rumph
U17 Women: Rachel Dickenson
U17 Men: Zalyn Bajor
Program Focus
At the highest competitive levels, you will be amongst the top junior athletes of the region, focusing on high level training and racing. For athletes in the middle to lower tier of experience and performance, our coaching staff will focus on moving you to that next level. You can expect an intense workout, with technique training and a lot of fun hitting new goals together. We have nearly 25 coaches on staff for the summer to work with athletes at each level. Coxswain education and coaching is also a focus for the ~20 coxswains we will have on the team.
Race Schedule for Competitive Team
- June 28-July 1- Independence Day Regatta (Philadelphia, PA) (~3 eights on boys and girls teams)
- July 20 – Philly Youth Regatta (Philadelphia, PA) (everyone)
- July 28-Aug 4 – Canadian Henley (St. Catherines, Ontario) (~5 eights on boys and girls teams)
*there will be an additional charge for race and travel fees for these regattas.
**Note that the team is not traveling to Oklahoma for the RowFest (previously US Nationals) this year.
How will the Boat Selection Process Work?
Evaluation will include on-the-water evaluations of skill and strength as well as erg testing. This selection process will allow us to provide consistent and dedicated training at every level. There is potential for movement between boats through the summer as athletes progress.
Practice Schedules:
Competitive Program:
June 10 – August 8th (6+ practices a week)
- Monday – Friday, 4:00-6:30 pm; in addition for the most competitive groups, morning practices will happen several days a week and include athletes based on availability. Athletes looking to compete at the highest level should expect to attend two practices a day several days a week.
- Saturday ~8:00-10:30 am (Saturday practice times will be determined by individual program coaches)
Attendance Expectations
The summer is a season where we know and expect athletes to have competing priorities. In general, the expectations on attendance are that the athlete is available for practice from June 10-August 8. That being said, family vacations, camp experiences, summer school, and everything else packed into the summer are important. For those working to make a boat for Canadian Henley, you should expect to spend July in an intense training period and this should be the priority.
On a daily basis the team manages attendance sheets in a google doc that athletes are expected to have their attendance accurately reflected on for the upcoming week.
Costs
- $1800 – This covers coaching, equipment, and equipment related fees for the summer. Regatta registration, transportation, and lodging will be billed based on each athlete’s attendance at the regattas.
Refund Policy
Registration fees paid to TBC Racing can be refunded in full, minus a processing fee, until your athlete attends their second practice. A 50% refund is available if cancellation occurs within 15 days after of the start date of the season.
