Description

The summer season is designed for athletes with at least one season of rowing experience who want to continue their growth and development.  During the summer, the program is organized to support a large number of athletes, and serve every level and individual schedule. Our racing team focuses on sweep rowing, while giving athletes opportunities to try their hand at sculling and small boats based on interest.

Which Program is Right For Me?

We ask that you think carefully about your availability and interest for the summer and choose from the two programs below (Competitive or Training).  If we feel like an athlete has chosen a program that does not meet their needs we will discuss it with the athlete and parents.

Competitive Program

  • The competitive program is recommended for those athletes who want to race and train at the highest levels of Junior rowing.  Age groups (U19 and U17) will also divide our group within the two Competitive program groups:
    • High Performance (HP):  Our most competitive level, for the top junior athletes of any age, focusing on high level training and racing regimes.  At this advanced level, athletes must commit up front to practice and regatta attendance. In addition to all other races,  Athletes who make this squad will have the opportunity to attend the Canadian Henley Regatta in Ontario Canada.
    • Select:Our traditional competitive level, perfect for high school aged, varsity level rowers .  Program goals will increase your technical expertise and overall fitness as we prepare for a demanding spring racing schedule. In addition to all other club races, top athletes on the select team will have the opportunity to attend the Independence Day regatta in Philadelphia and the US Club National Championship in Ohio.

Training Program

  • Our level for developing rowers and coxswains, or athletes who do not have the availability to commit to a racing season during the summer. Perfect for rowers returning from a novice year experience OR returning varsity athletes looking for a technical focus alongside challenging physical workouts to maintain or improve their strength and skill.  Program goals will increase your technical expertise and overall fitness, with a focus on stroke mechanics and understanding of physical work required at a varsity level.
  • Athletes in the Training program will also RACE! Included in the fee is access to race at Cap City Sprints (Anacostia) and Philly Youth Regatta (Philadelphia).

How will the Selection Process Work?

We ask that you select which program you feel most comfortable in when you register.  Within the Competitive program, we will have an evaluation period during the first two weeks of the season.  Athletes are asked to be available for practice during that time. If you are unavailable we will complete placement within your cohort when you can join the team.  Evaluation will include on-the-water evaluations of skill and strength as well as erg testing.  This selection process will allow us to provide consistent and dedicated training at every level. There is potential for movement between programs through the summer as athletes progress.
