The High School Novice Program is designed for athletes who are interested in trying rowing as a high school sport for the first time. Learn more about rowing as a sport here.
Practice Schedule
Aug 31, 2026– Nov 4, 2026
4pm-6:30pm Monday – Friday
8am-11am Saturday (non-regatta weekends)
Who It’s For
This program is for novice high school athletes who are prepared to:
- Attend practice six days per week
- Train and race as part of a competitive team
- Communicate absences in advance
- Support their teammates through consistent attendance and effort
Facilities
We row out of Thompson’s Boat Center, 2800 Virginia Ave, NW Washington, DC 20037.
In addition, TBC Racing operates a dedicated indoor training facility in the Watergate Office Building at 2600 Virginia Avenue NW, Suite T126 Washington, DC 20037. This elite level training facility allows athletes to train on land before or after practice and when weather conditions prevent rowing. It also includes space for athletes to complete homework between school and practice, as well as changing rooms and restrooms.
Attendance and Race Selection
Consistent attendance is essential. Coaches build lineups and training plans around the athletes who are regularly available, and every absence affects the entire crew.
Athletes who miss more than two practices within a two-week period may not be placed in a boat for the upcoming regatta. Race selection will also be based on attendance, effort, performance, attitude, and the needs of the team.
Committing to the High School Racing Program means committing not only to your own progress, but also to the teammates who depend on you.
Regatta Schedule
The following schedule applies to the experienced high school team. Novices will likely not race
Sweepers Head of the Potomac – Sept 26 (likely that Novice’s are not ready to race this early in the season but that will be evaluated by coaches)
Occoquan Chase – Oct 11 (Novice participation, to be determined)
Tail of the Potomac – Oct 31 (Novice will race)
Head of the Occoquan – Nov 1 (Novice participation, to be determined)
Registration Fee
$2350 – includes training and all regattas listed above that do not indicate an additional cost.
